Engagement Ring Settings

Engagement Ring Settings by Medawar Jewelers

When you’re searching for an engagement ring, there’s no one style you must adhere to for the setting. However, there’s a bit of difficulty in choosing an engagement ring insofar as there’s too many choices! Sometimes, a woman can get overwhelmed with how many options are out there -- and that’s where this guide comes in.

Read on to learn about the 4 basic engagement ring setting styles every woman should know before she starts her search for the perfect one.

Solitaire Engagement Rings

“Solitaire” is related to the word “solitary,” and they have similar meanings. They both refer to a single thing. When it comes to engagement rings, a solitaire is a ring that only has one center stone without any other stones next to it. This doesn’t mean that there aren’t any other stones on the ring—they can be on the underside of the ring. But a solitaire emphasizes a center stone, showing off the beauty and sparkle of a perfect diamond. This is an ideal setting when you have a big, high-clarity diamond.

Three Stone Engagement Rings

It’s easy to tell what a three stone engagement ring setting is: It refers to a center stone being framed by two smaller diamonds. While the two smaller diamonds can recapitulate the center stone’s shape, such as surrounding a round-cut center diamond by two smaller round-cut diamonds, many designers choose a contrasting look to create a real pop! Some designers have utilized trilliant (triangle)-cut diamonds or princess-cut diamonds as the side diamonds, which create different aesthetic experiences. When you want a surprising look that has a symbolic “triad” pattern, you may prefer the three stone engagement ring.

Side Stone Engagement Rings

The side stone engagement ring is a very broad category simply because “side stone” just means that the shanks on either side of the center diamond have jewels set in them. The most common, elegant look is to pave-set the shanks with gorgeous round-cut diamonds. But designers can use pear-cut diamonds as side stones, long channel-set baguettes, and so on. Another truly inventive thing about the side stone setting is that designers can easily utilize colored gemstones in this style, including tsavorites, sapphires, and rubies with colors that complement the elegance of the center stone.

Halo Engagement Rings

Halos are a remarkably popular style, and the reason for this is because halos create the illusion that the center diamond are bigger than they are! Halos are circles of precious metal and diamonds that surround the center stone. The end result is a center diamond that really blooms with light and sparkle. If you’ve chosen a smaller diamond as your center stone, halos are exceptional choices due to the impact of the surrounding diamonds on the eyes of those who view the engagement ring.
