Engagement Ring Care

Why Do I Need to Care for My Engagement Ring?

When you’ve found the engagement ring of your dreams, some think that your passion and love poured into it will be enough to keep it dazzling forever. But that’s not necessarily the case! Even the perfect engagement ring can get dinged, dented, dirty, or lose a stone. While it’s rare for an engagement ring to experience a tremendous failure, it’s always important to practice engagement ring care. An ounce of prevention is worth a pound of cure, especially in the world of bridal jewelry, and we at Medawar Jewelers want to offer some advice!

Engagement Ring Care Tips

Engagement ring maintenance should be done two to four times every year. You can easily remember that by breaking it up per season. When you’re cleaning it at home, stick to a mild detergent and warm water. Never clean your ring over the sink—that’s a recipe for disaster. Use a dish or bowl in this case. Gently scrub your diamond and the ring’s gold with a soft toothbrush, and avoid pressing too hard. Once the ring is clean, use a soft, lint-free rag to dry it. Air-drying won’t damage your ring, but it may leave spots on the diamond and gold. However, there’s a caveat to this advice: If your engagement ring has soft materials like opal or pearls, don’t clean your ring at home. They can be damaged very easily. Another handy thing to remember is that you should take your ring off when doing manual labor (think moving a sofa) or working with dirt or plants. However, if you’re in public, avoid taking off your engagement ring. And if you ever take off your engagement ring at home, ensure that it stays safe by keeping it in a fabric-lined jewelry box with dividers for different pieces.

Trust an Expert for Professional Engagement Ring Care Services

While it’s a good idea to do a little cleaning at home a few times every year, it’s an even better idea to take your ring into professionals twice annually. This advice is crucial if, as we mentioned, your engagement ring has pearls or opal, but even with gold and diamonds alone, professionals can clean your jewelry more thoroughly. Plus, if your engagement ring is made from white gold, a jeweler can plate it with rhodium to keep it brilliant white. Also, with the training, technology, and loupes that are available to professional jewelers, you can be confident that your treasured piece will be given the engagement ring care it deserves. From prong integrity to setting tightness, they’ll ensure that your ring is always at the peak of its physical as well as aesthetic perfection.
